• Security is hard

Troy Hunt on how easy it is to crack passwords:

This approach to cracking involves the GPU in my AMD R9 290X (now getting on a couple of years old) calculating alphanumeric hashes between 6 and 10 characters long and comparing them to the ones in the breach. You can see from the speed above that we’re working through them at 3,012.4 MH/s or in other words, calculating more than 3 billion (yes, with a “B”) hashes per second. Crikey

Using the wrong type of encryption can result in a several year old computer burning through 3 billion password possibilities per second. Sure, the example is an extreme one - but how many sites that we trust with our data are using outdated security protocols? I'm not sure I even want to know.

  • Russell for Parker

My jaw dropped when I heard Simmons suggest this trade.

"Here's my last trade. I think it's my favorite trade of all the trades. Jabari Parker for D'Angelo Russell straight up," said Simmons. "You can't [come up with a reason to not like it]. You won't be able to. It's a great trade."

Parker is a 6'8" forward who doesn't shoot threes. I'm not sure how he fits into a modern NBA offense. Seriously - he has taken seven threes this season, and missed every one.

He also blew out his knee last season. Plenty of players come back as good as ever after an ACL tear, but it's not a given.

Meanwhile, Russell can shoot, has good court vision, and is a wicked passer. He has a pile of question marks, like any 19 year old. But he sounds like a modern NBA player. The fact that we can even see his potential while the worst coach in the NBA sits on the bench is noteworthy.

It's a great trade for Milwaukee. It's a terrible trade for LA. Pass.

  • Fifteen minutes in with my first mechanical keyboard, I regret two things. 1. I didn't get a split keyboard. Ouch. 2. I went tenkeyless.

  • I lost a coworker today. He collapsed at his station right in the middle of working. Paramedics were still trying to resuscitate him when they rushed him away. He didn't make it.

  • I like when web services email my password in plain text.

I do not like when I don't have the choice to change those web services.

  • Politics

I do not understand people who associate themselves with a political party or philosophy.

    Here's the thing:

    There are smart Republicans.
    There are wacko Republicans.
    There are smart Democrats.
    There are wacko Democrats.

    There are smart liberals.
    There are wacko liberals.
    There are smart conservatives.
    There are wacko conservatives.

Associating yourself with any of those groups means associating yourself with the wackos along with the smart people. I prefer not to voluntarily associate myself with wackos.
